Thomas Seymour, Edward's uncle, was not Lord Protector in the King's minority. He wanted to rule, however, and was executed in 1549 for trying to take power!

Edward Seymour, Duke Of Somerset, was appointed Lord Protector at Henry VIII's death. However, he was an unpopular ruler and his jealous brother, Thomas, tried to overthrow him. Both brothers were ruined as a result.

Robert Dudley was the son of John Dudley, Duke Of Northumberland. John took over as Lord Protector following the ruin of the Seymour brothers.

Edward was a devout Protestant and, perhaps by the Lord Protector's persuasion, excluded his Roman Catholic half-sister, Mary, from the succession fearing she would make England a Catholic country again. His justification for excluding her was the annullment of her parents marriage, her parents being Henry VIII and Catherine Of Aragon.

Although Elizabeth was Protestant, like Edward, the young king excluded her from the line of succession because she was considered illegitimate after the annullment of her parents marriage. Her parents were Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn.

Edward left his throne to his Protestant cousin, Lady Jane Grey. She was a descendant of Henry VII and was married to the Lord Protector's son, Guildford Dudley. Had everything gone to plan, this would have kept the Dudleys in power. It is therefore difficult to know whether the idea to exclude the Tudor sisters was Edward's or the Lord Protector's.

Mary and Philip were married in Winchester Cathedral on 25 July 1554. As Philip spoke no English, the service was conducted in Spanish, French and Latin!

Philip III was not born until 1578! He came to the throne in 1598 and married Margaret of Austria the following year.

Philip IV was a century too young for Mary! He was born in 1605 and married twice. His first wife was Mariana of Austria, and his second wife was Elisabeth of France.

While the nursery rhyme "Mary, Mary, quite contrary, how does your garden grow?" is based on the Tudor Queen, Mary Contrary is not the name she became known by!

For her persecution of Protestants, Queen Mary became known as Bloody Mary!

Elizabeth I: Killer Queen? was the title of a documentary exploring the death of Amy Robsart, the wife of Queen Elizabeth I's favourite, Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, who died in suspicious circumstances in 1560.
