The baby born on 12 October 1537 was indeed named Edward. There was much rejoicing at his birth, but sadly his mother, Jane Seymour, died less than two weeks later of puerperal fever.

Henry was the name of Henry VIII's son, by Catherine Of Aragon, who died just a few weeks old in 1511. Both he and Catherine were devastated.

Thomas Wolsey, better known as Cardinal Wolsey, died on 29 November 1530. While he escaped execution, he died on his way to London to stand trial for treason. He lost the King's favour when he failed to secure his divorce from Catherine of Aragon.

Thomas More, once a great favourite of Henry VIII, was executed on 6 July 1535. More was a devout Roman Catholic and offended Henry by not supporting his divorce from Catherine of Aragon or his religious changes in the land.

Thomas Cromwell, who rose to power as Cardinal Wolsey fell from it, lost his head in the summer of 1540 for arranging the King's disastrous marriage to Anne Of Cleves.

Although Jane Seymour died at Hampton Court Palace on 23 October 1537, just eleven days after giving birth to the future King Edward VI, she is not said to haunt the palace.

Over the centuries, stories have been told about Anne Boleyn's ghost haunting The Tower Of London or her childhood home, Hever Castle, but not Hampton Court Palace.

Legend has it that Henry's fifth wife, Katherine Howard, was at Hampton Court when she was accused of adultery in 1541. She is said to have tried to reach her husband to plead for her life, but was dragged away screaming by guards. Her screaming ghost is said to haunt the corridor to this day.

Henry came to the throne on 21 April 1509. He was 55 years old when he died. While strong and athletic in his youth, he was plagued by ill health and obesity in his last years.

It was Henry's daughter, Queen Elizabeth I, who ruled for 44 years. She came to the throne on 17 November 1558 and ruled until her death on 24 March 1603.

It was Henry's father, King Henry VII, who ruled for 23 years. He came to the throne on 22 August 1485 and ruled until his death on 21 April 1509.
